Safeway Foundation Grant Benefits
MEDFORD, OREGON (12/15/09) -- A generous grant of $10,000 from The Safeway Foundation, and its customers will help Community Health Center provide comprehensive breast and cervical cancer screening to women qualifying for the organization’s Every Woman Can Have a Medical Home program.
Representatives of the Medford Safeway store will be in attendance to present the check to clinic executive director Peg Crowley on Thursday, December 17 at 11:00 a.m. at the Medford Center Safeway store.
“Safeway customers and employees are passionate about programs that give women an opportunity to seek preventive cancer screenings exams. Breast cancer is a major health threat to women, and we've made a significant commitment to raising funds for programs geared toward breast cancer research and prevention,” says Medford Safeway store co-manager Josie Blake.
Community Health Center started the Every Woman Can Have a Medical Home program in July 2008. The program eliminates cost as a barrier for uninsured or underinsured women to obtain a well-woman exam and referral for mammogram by providing a free first medical office visit. “It is important to screen for cancer, but it is also important for women to have an opportunity to come in and establish care so that they can develop an ongoing source for medical care,” says Crowley. Last year, 329 women were screened and 9 cancers were found. In just the quarter, July 1 – September 30, 2009, of 29 women screened, 22 had abnormal lab screening values and 2 were found to have breast cancer. “This program saves and changes lives,” says Crowley.
